February 16, 2015
Ahh, yes. Valentine's Day. The day of love, or for some, the day of Netflix and wearing all black. As many of you know, Europe is a truly fantastic and romantic place to be with a loved one, but can you imagine being there on Valentine's day? LOVE OVER LOAD. Let's take a look at some of the sweetest, loving, and light hearted traditions that take place in some of the most romantic cities in the world.
Verona, Italy This city which was made famous by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet becomes one of the most coveted tourist destinations around Valentine's Day. In the center of Piazza dei Signori, a giant red heart is painted that is surrounded by lanterns. Hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the world come to this special city to visit Juliet's balcony to tuck away Valentine letters of love, sorrow, and hopefulness in the crumbling walls in hopes that their love will be fulfilled. You can even enter in a contest for the most romantic letter written to Juliet.
Paris, France Dubbed one of the most romantic cities on the earth by people everywhere, what other city would have a hotel named Hotel Amour other than Paris? Couples in love, friends out to eat, and families alike take meal time seriously here on this holiday. The relaxed and cool vibe is casual and cozy and just short walk to Sacre Coeur, also known as one of the best views of Paris. After taking in the view, grab some roses from one of the dozens of epic flower markets scattered around this city and make your way over to the Siene! Not only is Paris the City of Love, but also the City of Lights. Couples traditionally walk down the Siene River and admire the extra lights put out for this special day.
Venice, Italy The Love Lock Bridges, I am sure you have heard of them. There is one in almost every major European city. Florence, Salzburg, Barcelona, Sevilla, Cannes, etc. They become so overloaded with locks, city officials often have to cut majority of them off to lighten the weight of the bridge! But in Venice, Italy, the locks are scattered throughout the dozens and dozens of bridges in this slowly submerging city. Couples buy a lock that they sign with the date and attach it on a bridge of their choice and throw away the key, calling it a "lucchetti di amore" or a "lock of love." Young Italian couples will often exchange chocolate covered hazelnuts called "baci perugina" that are covered in red foil with romantic notes tucked inside.
Edinburgh, Scotland Calling all singles! This is your place to be on Valentine's Day! Single men and women gather in their local bars, restaurants, and homes of friends and families to attend parties where you draw a name, meet the person, and spend the rest of the night drinking and dancing with them! Call it what you may, but you never know who you just might meet...
