Eddard Stark said it best, "Brace yourselves, winter is coming." And that it is, my friends. My skin goes into full-blown panic mode when winter rolls around. Flakey skin, cold sores, and dark under eyes is not a look I am going for. Also, being a college student trying to make her way to New York, spending a shiny penny on every skin care product just isn't in the cards right now.
So, being the drug store junky that I am (I like to think that Iris, the CVS Queen, and I are kindred spirits), I have compiled a list of the ultimate skin savers for those colder months to put our best selves forward.
So, for when you love that hot shower but your face isn't taking it kindly...
Noxzema Classic Formula
My hero, is all I can say about this. When the wind is whipping and I am walking out of my house in one degree weather (juuuust one), or when I get in the near boiling shower to relieve my self of the terrible cold, I feel just a little bit better knowing I prepped with this product. It is a non-foaming formula face wash so it is creamy and heavy, but don't let that scare you! It wipes away any trace of make-up, excess oil, and smooths out flakey and tired skin with eucalyptus oil for that classic Noxzema tingle. Peeling? Go buy a facial sponge (personally, I am #TeamBuffPuff) from your nearest drug store and slather on some Noxzema and lightly scrub in gentle little circles.
For when you wake up late and go about your day sans moisturizer...
Olay Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid
Or The Artist Formally Known as Oil of Olay. This holy grail of skin care products has been around since the 50s and has been a cult buy for ladies since (hence why some call it Oil of Old Ladies #hatersgonnahate). Olay Beauty Fluid is light pink, smells like baby powder, and my skin just soaks it up, sometimes so much so, I have to put more on! No pore cloggage, to pimples, no dry skin, or rashes. Just smooth as baby skin! This is my absolute go to for mornings and night.
I add a little Egyptian Magic (never heard of it? Get it here) to add an extra punch of moisture during those extra windy and dry winter days.
For when you had one too many cocktails at your holiday party and wake up less than fresh faced...
Maybelline Master Concealer
Anybody who knows me knows I am a die hard, tried and true NARS and Chanel make up fan. That ish is my jam. Always have been. Even in high school I was a make up snob and I vowed that my sensitive skin, especially my delicate under eyes, would never see the horror some drug store concealers can do. So you can imagine my hesitance when a friend told me that her flawless concealer was Maybelline. My sweet little NARS concealer stick has been demoted to shaping and defining my brows and brow bones because there is new kid on the block. Spoiler alert: I fell hard and fast for the Maybelline liquid concealer. I just dab a little dot under my eyes, around my nose, and across my chin and viola! My skin looks ***flawless. The best way to describe this product is that it is like liquid skin. Not too matte, not too shiny,
never budges. It is juuuust right.
Uh-oh. For when you've had to blow your nose every other breath (or you've kissed somebody with the virus, oo la-la) and you develope a dun-dun-dunnnn.. COLD SORE....
DIY Cold Sore Lip Balm
I am weird about some ingredients in topical medications. With extra sensitive skin (I can't even use Neutrogena), I like to know exactly what I am slathering on myself. So when the Devil himself, also referred to as cold sores, appears on the corner of my lips, I know exactly what to do. I emptied out an old lip balm pot and filled it with extra virgin coconut oil and a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Mix the oils together and pop them in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Because of the anti-viral properties in coconut oil and the anti-inflammatory and cooling help of the eucalyptus, the two work wonders when a cold sore comes around. Along with the DIY lip balm, pressing fresh garlic directly on the wound is a great way to rid of it ASAP! The anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties of garlic are a sure fire way to speed up the process. I haven't had a full blown sore in years since starting my balm and garlic ritual.
For when you just can't give up that cranked up heater for the sake off your flakey skin....
Burt's Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion
I am one of those annoying people who will try a product love it, but will hear about something else and go buy that instead of rebuying the first product again. Well, not in the case of this body lotion. Thick, creamy, naturally sweet smelling, and not sticky or greasey to the touch, this Burt's Bees lotion is my number one go-to during winter months. My skin just drinks it right up! The smell is so pleasant and light and not in the least bit overwhelming. I use this for everything from a hand cream to heavy duty skin repair. You will definitely be rebuying this!
