French Girl Inspired Pieces for Every College Woman
January 6, 2016
Hey everybody! I hope the new year is treating you kindly! I am so excited to announce that I have accepted another internship. Magazine mogul and starter of Spin Magazine, Bob Guccione Jr. offered me a position with his newest project: Wonderlust. Wonderlust (not wanderlust, it is a little play on words) is the newest high-end travel magazine. I am so excited to serve as the style and design intern, covering all things a la mode in the travel world.
To start things off, let's talk college style. As a college senior (woah), I have learned by trial and error what the definite style musts for the most influential and exciting time of our lives. Five and a half inch yellow flatforms? Hard pass. Everyday leather? Absolutely. I'm a sucker for the French beauty regimen of effortless beauty and looking casually flawless. Incorporating this into every day college life, from weekend escapades that turn into school day stress, shouldn't be a struggle. Take a look below and check out my take on French style meets college girl fun!
2015 was the year of the sneaker. New Balance, Nike, Adidas, and across the pond faves like Supergas, made their debut (or is it a comeback?) with flirty pairings like girly dresses, worn-in denim and tees, and classic leather and canvas jackets. My personal favorites are my black pony hair Supergas (yes, they are as amazing as they sound) and my New Balances with gold detailing (thanks J Crew for finally releasing these bad boys Stateside)! Both seamlessly work for casual date night, effortless errand wear, busy class schedules, and late night studies!
That is a Little Red Dress to you! Of course, the pinnacle of fashion has been and will always be the LBD but we have the rest of our lives to rock that style staple. Whether your frock of choice is candy apple red or deep merlot, you can't go wrong with a classic silhouette and a tastefully flirty neckline (yes, that is possible) with a timeless bag and heels to go and you have yourself the new and improved Fall Formal ensemble that will be sure to drop jaws.
I live for a good stripe. Looking back in baby pictures, it is all I wore! You can never go wrong with black and white stripe, the French girl necessity is timeless for a reason! Afraid of a horizontal stripe? Fear not! Choose a top that isn't boxy in shape, show off your legs in some skinnies, and pair the stripes with bold jewelry. Turkish coin necklaces are my current go-to.
This summer, I lived in Italy for four months and traveled extensively with my bucket bag by my side. Effortless to carry, always chic, and easy to open (especially when you're in a pinch holding a gelato), this bag is everything for the college girl on the go.
As an owner of both a brown and black leather jacket, I am a firm believer in the diversity of everyday leather. Just the other day, Kendall Jenner sported Adidas, leggings, a white v-neck, and a killer leather jacket for the ultimate off-duty street style. Take a cue from Kendall for class time comfort, or rock the monochromatic look in all black (sweater, skinnies, and driving moccasins perhaps?) for that long flight to your hometown.
It truly amazes me how people who don't own chambrays function when choosing an outfit. The timeless and sans effort piece should be owned by women everywhere. Button it up and throw a pull-over sweater on top for a classic prep look, tie it around your waist when you sport a casual dress and tennies, or simply toss it on unbuttoned over a graphic tee and sweet and silky pull-on shorts for a weekend en masse.
Nothing portrays femininity like a delicate bracelet or a simple band around your pretty little polished finger. Quiet on the eyes but style's enduring essential, understated jewelry is artwork you can wear everyday. Classic yellow gold and silver are always a la mode, but there is nothing wrong with trying the trends like rose gold and gun metal.
The ankle-grazing boot has become a closet requisite for me. Couple these up with anything from sweater dresses to a blazer and button up, and you've got yourself an outfit that can go from weekend to workday. Best part? You can find these in stores everywhere for prices that are college budget friendly. I bought mine from Target three years ago and they are still as good as gold.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we should all say, "no, thank you" when a neon yellow bra peeks out from a ladies top. Wearing delicates in more serious shades such as cream, eggplant, and champagne don't have to be for your grandmother. For women with smaller chests, balconettes and lace bras look pretty and are even work appropriate. Full-chested ladies, there are pretty bras that will keep you lifted and comfy all day. Go for a supportive fit with pretty detailing like classic lace and a maybe a razor back with delicate details. A lady-like bra in a semi-sheer top can take your business casual outfit from run of the mill to work place mod.
